Clydebank Match Preview

It’s the penultimate match of an excellent season, the final home match of the campaign, and we toast the occasion with a visit from the Champions Clydebank to Portland Park for our 29th GreenVersity WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

It’s been a mammoth season, and 55 games is suddenly down to two; starting with the visit from Gordon Moffat’s Champions Clydebank, who have already long sealed the title & will have a major eye on next Saturday’s Lowland League Play-Off match away to Musselburgh Athletic.

Clydebank have had an exemplary season, they secured the title on the first weekend of April after dominating the league since mid-August and they now chase the promotion that their supporters so badly crave. Throw in a Scottish Cup day to remember away to Hibernian and it’s been a season to treasure for the Paper Hankies. Will they be the first club from the West to win the league AND the play-off to enter the Lowland League? Gordon Moffat will certainly fancy their chances.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Bare bones. It’s the only way to describe it.

Luke Watt was forced off early second half in Saturday’s game and he’s likely to have kicked his last ball this season, although Jaime Gallagher returned to the squad on Saturday as we lead the push to secure second.

And they are unfortunately not the only ones ruled out for the rest of the season.

Nathan Baird hasn’t kicked a ball since tearing a calf muscle at Clydebank in March, while Jack Sherrie is still awaiting news on surgery for a hernia. Scott McLean is working through the lengthy rehabilitation following successful knee reconstruction surgery in early March, whilst Ewan McLevy is also working towards pre-season after a knee injury sustained against St. Roch’s in October.

It’s time for a big finish from the boys; win both of our last two games & that guarantees we equal our best ever finish as a club, and possibly even breaks that record. It’s been a fantastic season for us, I’m sure the supporters have enjoyed it as much as I certainly have, and a finish like that would be the perfect reward for that campaign. The challenge doesn’t come much tougher than Clydebank & Talbot though, we need to be at our best which is a big ask when we’re missing some key players. But that’s when you have to dig deep, and that’s what I’ll be asking everyone to do again this weekend.

Clydebank have had an outstanding season, they’ve clearly been the top side in the division by quite some way this campaign and I’m delighted for Grace & Moff for what they’ve achieved, under some pressure you’d have to say. Congratulations to them & all the very best for the Lowland League Play-Off.

I’d just like to say a massive well done to Tony Murphy & his Development Team, who secured the Conference E title last Friday in some style at Portland Park. An 11-1 win is quite a way to round off a league campaign, great to see a big crowd here cheering them on, and some celebrations after the match! Still got a Cup semi-final this week, a great season could still get even better. Best of luck to them!

⚽️️ DEAN CAIRNS ⚽️

27 year old Dean was probably one of the signings which flew under the radar in the summer, perhaps overshadowed by others, but he has proved to be one of the signings of the season as he has driven the Bankies engine room this season.

Dean began his career in the Academy of Airdrieonians before spells with East Kilbride & Linlithgow Rose. He joined Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in 2021 and enjoyed a two year spell at Guy’s Meadow before a big money move to Darvel in 2023, where he lifted the Scottish Junior Cup & West of Scotland Cup.

⚽️️ ANDY LEISHMAN ⚽️

Undoubtedly THE goalkeeper in the West for the past decade or more, Andy has certainly got his mojo back this season & has been a key player for the Bankies.

Began his career with Kello and then Lugar, before making the move to Auchinleck Talbot as a fresh faced 21 year old & he proceeded to dominate Junior football, winning everything there is to win in the next 13 seasons.

A surprise move to Darvel in 2023 followed, where he lifted the Scottish Junior Cup & West of Scotland Cup for the umpteenth time. At 36, the big man is as big a presence as ever.

The first encounter of 2023-24 was a fresh spring day at Holm Park in March, and the travelling Seasiders found their hosts to be in unforgiving mood.

Goals from Thomas Collins and Liam McGonigle put the Bankies two to the good at the interval, and as Troon tried to attack to get back into the game they were mercilessly picked-off. Callum Graham made it 3-0, only for Leyton Dunlop to reduce the deficit almost immediately. However, Callum Graham again & then Lee Gallacher put Troon to the sword with a resounding victory.

The return match of 2023-24 was a comfortable Troon victory, as the defeat sounded the death knell to the Bankies title hopes in the Ayrshire sunshine.

Troon had the better of the early exchanges, but their prolificacy in the first half was the source of much frustration against a nervy-looking visiting side. It took the Bankies until the second half to come out of their slumber & trouble Burgess, but that was the catalyst e we saw for the second 45 and two goals from Kyle Gilroy put the game to bed.
